Website Cookie Law goes live tomorrow!

The EU have imposed a new website cookie law, which goes live tomorrow.
This says that if your website stores a cookie on someone's computer, the website needs to ask permission first.

The one exception is that if the cookie is *necessary* to perform the actions that the user has requested. [All the examples that I've seen given can be done without cookies, so I'm not sure how necessary they need to be]

Asking permission from every user is impossible to do without making a large proportion of websites in the country unusable. So the UK Government is struggling to work out how to implement this new legislation without putting the entire UK on-line presence at a disadvantage.

The Information Commissioners Office have said that the law won't initially be enforced unless someone complains about your website. However, you should be able to show that you are taking new legislation seriously and responding to it.

Some suggested actions are:
Performing a cookie audit - record what cookies your website leaves, and what type they are.
Decide if they are 'necessary' to provide provide the website functions.
If you store any cookies that are not necessary to provide functionality, then you need to start investigating ways to ask the users for their permission.

The advice from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) is to not actually make any changes to your website at this time, but to be prepared.

The Information Commissioners Office are expected to be issuing further advice in the near future.

If you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call.
